What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda, often dubbed as the sister science of yoga, originated in India over 5,000 years ago. It's a Sanskrit word derived from "Ayur," meaning life, and "Veda," meaning knowledge or science. At its core, Ayurveda seeks to promote longevity, vitality, and overall well-being by establishing harmony within the body and with the surrounding environment.


The Three Doshas:

Central to Ayurvedic philosophy is the concept of the three doshas – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Think of these doshas as unique blends of elemental energies, each responsible for specific bodily functions and characteristics:


  1. Vata: Comprised of air and space, Vata governs movement, creativity, and vitality. When balanced, it fosters enthusiasm and agility. However, an excess of Vata can lead to anxiety, dryness, and restlessness.

  2. Pitta: Formed by fire and water elements, Pitta governs metabolism, digestion, and intellect. Balanced Pitta manifests as sharp wit and strong digestion. Yet, excessive Pitta may manifest as irritability, inflammation, or digestive issues.

  3. Kapha: Earth and water unite to create Kapha, governing stability, strength, and immunity. Balanced Kapha results in calmness and endurance. However, an excess of Kapha can lead to lethargy, weight gain, and attachment.

Understanding your unique constitution:

Just as each of us has a unique fingerprint, we possess a distinctive combination of the doshas, known as our Prakriti. By identifying our dominant doshas, we can tailor our lifestyle, diet, and yoga practice to restore equilibrium and enhance overall wellness.


Practical Ayurvedic Tips for Everyday Life:

  1. Rise and shine with the sun: Start your day early to align with nature's rhythm and cultivate a sense of vitality.

  2. Nourish with whole foods: Embrace a diet rich in fresh, seasonal fruits, vegetables, and grains to support your body's needs and pacify imbalances.

  3. Honor your body's signals: Listen to your body's innate wisdom and prioritise rest, hydration, and mindful movement.

  4. Embrace self-care rituals: Incorporate Ayurvedic practices such as oil massage (Abhyanga), nasal cleansing (Neti), and tongue scraping into your daily routine for rejuvenation and detoxification.

  5. Sync with the seasons: Adapt your lifestyle and diet according to seasonal changes to maintain harmony with nature's cycles.

Incorporating Ayurveda into your Yoga Practice:

Just as Ayurveda emphasises balance, so does yoga. By integrating Ayurvedic principles into your yoga practice, you can deepen your awareness of your body-mind connection and cultivate holistic well-being. Consider exploring yoga sequences tailored to your dosha, incorporating pranayama (breathwork) to balance your energies, and practicing mindfulness to stay grounded and present.
